Understated hero

You are a person long dead,
You have fought and died in battle,
A very long time ago,
Before I was born.

What eyes did you have?
The love and hate in them,
The wisdom and your visions,
The things you saw to make you fight.

What kind of person were you?
To be written down in history,
Yet no man can now tell,
Your importance and your character.

I wish they wrote more,
Of the fire in your heart,
Not of the coward they wrote of,
To placate oppressive minds.
